Asteroids are rocky or metallic bodies left over from the formation of the planets. Most orbit in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, where Jupiter’s gravity kept them from gathering into a planet; others, the near-Earth asteroids, cross the inner solar system, and the Trojans share Jupiter’s orbit. This page follows the largest ones, more than 250 km across, and those visited by spacecraft, such as Vesta and Ceres (Dawn), Bennu (OSIRIS-REx), Ryugu (Hayabusa2) or Dimorphos, which NASA’s DART deliberately struck in 2022 to test how to deflect an asteroid. Their positions come from JPL Horizons.

Questions and answers

Could an asteroid hit the Earth?

Small ones hit every day and burn up as shooting stars. Astronomers track the larger near-Earth asteroids, and none known is on course to hit us in the next century.

What is the largest asteroid?

Ceres, about 940 km across, is so large it counts as a dwarf planet; among the others, Vesta and Pallas are the largest, a little over 500 km.
